Externship Program

Fourth-year students are invited to St. Vincent Charity Hospital for a 1 to 3 month clinical rotation during their final year of podiatric medical school to further advance their knowledge in podiatric surgery and operating room protocol. Positions are available June through May each academic year. We have 2-3 positions available per month. Students will work directly the podiatric surgical residents, other medical students and podiatric staff attendings in the inpatient clinic, office rotations and operating room, all of which are interested in your educational experience.

Students will receive extensive exposure to reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. We take pride that our program encourages students to learn in an atmosphere that is nurturing and encouraging. You will take part and have hands-on opportunities to work with some of the finest podiatric surgeons in our profession. In addition you able to participate in cadaver labs, lecture consortiums, journal clubs, pathology and radiology conferences. During the final week of the externship rotation, the student will be required present a topic (chosen by the Program Director & Residents) at Radiology Conference.

  1. Who may extern?
    Applicants from all podiatric schools are invited to apply.

  2. How will I be notified if I am accepted or not?
    A confirmation or denial letter will be sent.

  3. If accepted, what should I bring with me?
    A white lab coat and scrubs.

  4. What happens if the month of my first choice is not available?
    Available months will be offered to you.

  5. I've heard that only students who have rotated as an extern are chosen as residents in the program. Is this true?
    No.

  6. Do I need personal transportation?
    Yes, as a student you will be required to rotate at different facilities. If one does not have a car, renting a car for the month is encouraged. Parking is free at St. Vincent Charity Hospital.

  7. Is there housing?
    No, but utilization of a call-room at the hospital can be arranged at no charge.

  8. Are meals provided?
    Yes, most meals are provided.
