Goals

To gain an appreciation of private practice in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

Objectives

To provide the podiatric surgical resident with:

  • Experience in the evaluation and treatment of common foot and ankle ailments and deformities.
  • Experience in the preoperative evaluation and assessment and postoperative care of patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery.
  • An appreciation of the complexity of the management of a private practice.
  • Opportunity to observe and participate in the management of patients in a private practice setting or managed health care setting.

Methodology

  • The resident is required to log 24 full days (or 48 half days) in a private practice or managed health care setting with an attending physician on the active staff of the Division at the Medical Center. Other attending physician offices may be utilized upon approval of the Director of Residency Training.
  • Residents are required to submit a report by the first Tuesday of each month at the resident meeting. The log is to include: location, date, half/full day, patient name and type of activity (postoperative care, surgical consult, initial office visit, cast/dressing change, etc.).
  • The residents are encouraged to periodically present interesting cases seen during this rotation at the Tuesday radiology conference. All x-rays borrowed ar to be returned in a timely manner.
  • It is the responsibility of the resident to contact the physician to confirm the date and time. In addition, the resident must be sure all other duties and responsibilities are completed.
  • It is the responsibility of the resident to contact the physician to confirm affiliation agreements are on file and signed in the podiatric office.
  • It is the responsibility of the resident to be sure an evaluation is completed by the attending physician after completion of the time spent in the private practice setting. For example, if the resident is only going to be attending an office for two days; when this is completed, the resident must acquire an evaluation from the attending. The resident is also responsible for completing an evaluation of the office rotations. One composite evaluation will suffice for all offices visited.
